This page is dedicated to my mother who wrote
Place Names of Flatbush and got me interested in onomastics.
When I first started teaching I decided to do some research on
the name of my school Berriman Junior High School. I could not
find any other reason for the naming of my school except that it
was located on Berriman Street. I then turned my research on to
how Berriman Street got its name. This whole process led me to
write a socio-economic and historical curriculum for the school
neighborhood. This began my writing career.
